Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life. That’s the cliche, right? Well in my case it’s true. I love what I do! In fact, a photoshoot can bring me out of a sad funk. This senior portrait shoot is the perfect example. I had just been feeling meh, pretty much all week. Then I show up to Lucia’s senior photo shoot and met Lucia and her family; BOOM! I am back and feeling great.

Location:

We choose to shoot Lucia’s senior pictures in downtown Missoula. This location is amazing. In downtown Missoula you can get some great urban ally ways, cool stairs, and murals. You can even get out the wind and rain if the elements are against you. Just a little way’s away from the “city” stuff is the river with a beautiful view of the Mountains. The trees were golden and it was golden hour with the most incredible light.

Styling

Dang! This girl had style! I say it all the time. Seniors! Bring everything to your senior portrait shoot! You may not end up wearing it all but it’s so great to have options. I am happy to let you change as many times as you want. Lucia had a great combination of dressy, casual, flowy, and what I would call edgy! (Seriously the overalls look was fire!)

She also followed my advice and did her make-up just a little more than normal including some sweet fake lashes that she had removed within seconds of us being done with the shoot 😂.

When it comes to styling for senior portraits, I say; be you, just punch it up! Show off who you are right now. Honestly, I have no issue with showing off the styles of your time in high school. I think it’s a perfect time capsule. I recommend wearing one or two outfits that are a little more “timeless” and then just go for it! Show the world what we wore in 2021!

Bring along the parents

On one of my last senior shoots, the mom and I were talking about how when we had our senior pictures, taken we went by ourselves and pretty much just spent a few hours alone with our photographer. I can’t tell you how much I love it when the parents come along for the shoot! They can see things in their child that maybe I, as the photographer, might miss. The parents can bring out a side of them that I might not know about. I have noticed that when a parent brings up their senior’s ‘significant other” I always get a great smile. Above all, I think it is a great right of passage for the senior during this exciting time.
